THERE is a story of a Lancashire lad enjoying a day in London - shall we say 'Up for t' Cup!' Thinking to stump a city booking clerk, he put his head in an Underground booking office window and called for 'Two to Bent'.
Immediately came back the inquiry, 'Ay, lad, Chow or Chequer?'
'By gum, mon, thou 'rt no Cockney, art?'
'Cockney, mi foot. I were born i' Dobbill'.

THIS morning the usual monthly meeting of the Town Council was held at the Gas Offices. Mr Alderman Harwood said that before commencing the business of the Council he wished to ask a question, viz., had the police received instructions to prevent the public coming into that room during the meetings of the Council, and if so he should like to know by whose authority those instructions had been given? - The Mayor said he knew of no such instructions having been given. - The Town Clerk said he did not think any such instructions had been given. - Mr Alderman Harwood said he asked the question because he had received a letter from a gentleman stating that he applied for admission at the last Council meeting, but was refused admission by the police.
Mr Stronge said the policemen were in attendance, but not to refuse admission to the public. It must be ignorance on the part of the officer. - Mr Bromley and Mr Taylor stated that they had received complaints about the same thing. - The Town Clerk said it must be a mistake. - The Mayor, to the porter: You had better go down to the policeman and tell him to stop no one. - The matter then dropped.
