SIR: Regarding the demolition of properties on Churchgate, Bolton. It is to be hoped that both Planning and Architectural authorities, bearing in mind the area being of historical interest, should have erected upon it the type and character of buildings that would be more befitting the area, rather than the recent red brick building which really does seem far too tall and out of place within such an area.
There seems to be too much emphasis by architects today on erection of buildings far too high and mainly of office accommodation. The buildings between the Evening News office and the Man and Scythe do not have any pleasing features, although the Brasshouse hostelry seems to conform more satisfactorily than the other shops and offices. This is if one keeps looking ahead instead of looking up. I look upon it as bad planning and architecture.
