BOLTON pensioners Ada and Bill Rhodes were watching the birdie again in more ways than one - just days after a mean thief stole their treasured garden bird table.

Ada and Bill, of Crompton Way, were left devastated when the timber bird table, bought as a Christmas present by their daughter Diane, was stolen in broad daylight.

Diane was so incensed she nominated the thief as the BEN Rat of the Week.

But the letter was spotted by Michael Phillips, of Furness Avenue, Bolton, who recently started a small cottage industry making moulded concrete bird baths and other garden ornaments.

He rolled up at the couple's home with a new bird table for them - and a BEN photographer was there to make sure they really were "watching the birdie". Mr Rhodes said: "My wife was particularly upset when the bird table was stolen.

"She loves watching the wild birds.

"This is a very kind gesture by Mr Phillips. We are very grateful."
