SIR: On reading the letter from KD of Great Lever, (BEN, February 23 ), my first inclination was to ignore it, But I find I can't because in my mind, the gist of the letter indicates an attitude, that I was convinced had disappeared from the minds of every peace-loving person on this planet. I may be doing KD of Great Lever an injustice, but he/she has convinced me that they would sooner we turned a blind eye to Saddam Hussain's aspirations. The attitude I write of is that which prevailed throughout the world during the years 1933 through to 1939, when the leading nations of the world, of which Britain was one, chose to adopt the three wise monkeys' attitude of "See all, hear all, say nowt" and stand by, as Hitler and his cohorts built up a vast array of weaponry. And while they built up this war machine they enjoyed their leisure time by persecuting the Jewish people, destroying their homes, and businesses, and when they saw the world was ignoring these pleasantries, built and filled massive camps to house those Jews, chosen to participate in "The final solution". The final count was in excess of six million, of which figure, thousands, were babes in arms, completely innocent, dead, simply because the world "turned a blind eye".

It was stated, at the end of that war, "We must never let it happen again", but it is painfully obvious that some people, even knowing the facts of those terrible times, are still prepared to ignore the atrocities planned by Saddam Hussain and his weapons of mass destruction for, let there be no doubt in your mind, KD, his main target is the state of Israel, where those who did survive the "Holocaust" have been granted refuge. I make no distinction in my feelings for the innocents, and can assure you that I include the ordinary citizens of Iraq in that statement. We can only hope that if a bombing strike has to be carried out, the scientists have "got it right" and that the so-called "Smart Bombs" will be sophisticated enough to hit purely military targets.
