TOP marks for a top team were the words used to describe the results of a recent Ofsted inspection at Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom.

Inspectors said the school had an exceptionally positive ethos, which contributed greatly to the pupils' all round development - despite facing financial difficulties.

Pupils, parents, staff and governors were said to share a common purpose which sustained high levels of behaviour and academic attainment.

Inspectors said: "High standards of attainment have been sustained and the performance of pupils in GCSE examinations has continued to show a rising trend."

Quality of teaching was described as "a strong feature of the school."

Headteacher Mr Frank Bennett said: "Overall the report is extremely positive and a tremendous pat on the back for everyone connected with Woodhey - it's top marks for a top team."

Inspectors added: "Pupils' attitudes behaviour and personal development are a strength of the school and pupils demonstrate a real interest in their work.

"Behaviour in class is exemplary. Pupils are courteous to adults, and from constructive relationships with one another, the school gives feeling of a secure and caring environment.

"The school has had to work and continues to work especially hard to achieve its ambitious goals against a climate of financial difficulties. Income per pupil is significantly below the average for schools of this type nationally, and staffing levels are lower than normal.

"The school is faced with major budgetary problems. But the quality of teaching and commitment of all staff makes a major contribution to the achievement of the school's aims, in spite of the limited resources."

Mr Bennett said: "I am extremely pleased with the report, and also that the inspectors recognised difficulties we face in the school's annual budget and in the inadequacies of the building."
