SCHOOL kids are at the centre of a new government push to get more people off the roads and on to public transport.
Pupils across the county will work on a new computer package aimed at teaching them about the history of travel and the benefits of using buses and trains.
The Travelwise programme is part of a wider campaign to prise drivers out from behind the wheel and find other ways of getting to work.
Lancashire County Council leader John West said: "Children can learn in a fun way about the importance of using cars less and public transport more.
"I hope it will encourage the next generation of drivers to think about increased congestion and pollution and change attitudes."
Transport Minister Glenda Jackson MP spoke at a conference at Park Hall Hotel, Charnock Richard, to mark the launch.
She told delegates that the Travelwise Association is the largest transport campaign in the country and outlined Labour's policy to reduce road congestion.
She said: "Travelwise proves there is a growing understanding of the need to change the way we travel and local authorities hold the key to its success."
Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle added: "It's vital that we take public transport seriously and make it an accessible option for everyone.
"I'm very pleased that Glenda Jackson came to Chorley and the new initiative is welcome."
