RESIDENTS have grounded a model helicopter club from Cheshire after a campaign to stop members flying their machines near a Bolton beauty spot.
Villagers from Chapeltown and Entwistle were angered when the radio controlled helicopters started taking off from a field bordering Green Arms Road, Turton last summer.
They complained that noise made from the Cheshire Helicats was intrusive for residents and spoiled the area for the droves of people who head for the hills at weekends expecting a peaceful stroll in the countryside.
Residents also feared a model helicopter could go out of control or walkers would be hurt after being forced to step into the road to avoid a machine.
Environmental health officials backed residents' objections and the club were told to apply for planning permission.
Councillors turned down the application but planning rules mean the club can still fly on 28 days in one year.
Mr Peter Bellis of Overshores Road, Entwistle organised the petition against the club fearing residents and walkers would once again have to put with the high pitched buzz during late summer nights and weekends.
He said" "I don't know why they come all this way - presumably because they will not allow them to fly in Cheshire.
"I do not want to stop them flying their helicopters completely but obviously there are the times and the places to do it. Why they chose to fly in this area at weekends when it is well populated with visitors I do not know."
