WORSLEY MP Terry Lewis has backed a Government campaign to try to stop people using mobile phones while driving.
Roads minister Helene Hayman launched the mobile phone danger campaign this week and it has the support of the police, the AA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, road safety officers and the mobile phone industry.
"Mobile phones are an essential tool of modern life," said Mr Lewis. "But like all tools, there is a time and a place where they should be used. And driving is neither the time nor the place."
Mr Lewis stressed that by using a phone while driving people are not concentrating properly on the road, are committing a prosecutable offence and, at worst, may cause an accident, serious injury or death. Government advice is never to use a hand-held phone while driving and it is safer not to even use a hands-free phone. A message service should be used instead and drivers should take regular breaks.
