SIR: Boltonians must be horrified that Labour councillors have given £1m of their money to a commercial house-builder, money that should have been spent on school or road repairs or saving libraries. Whilst a government Minister authorised house building at Birtenshaw, Labour councillors failed to ensure that correct legal advice was sought about the Covenant. (Officers obtained brief advice from someone not specialised in land law).
Perhaps voters will ask their Labour candidate for the May election why the council let legal officers seek poor advice. Also, ask what the £1m bill is made up of. Voters will find their Labour candidate has little or no idea. Bolton deserves better than the arrogance of a Labour Council, which has councillors with neither the ability nor inclination to govern well. They are weak at controlling officers and arrogant, refusing to admit mistakes or take responsibility. Shamefully, they let women and children stop the bulldozers at Birtenshaw.
