COMMUTERS across Greater Manchester are being urged to "Go Green".

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive is spearheading a major campaign urging the public to cut pollution levels by using public transport.

A series of posters will be appearing at more than 400 sites across the region highlighting the issues behind the campaign and how the public can lend its support.

GMPTE is already campaigning to cut levels of pollution and congestion and as the owner of Manchester's Metrolink tram system has already played a part in taking more than two million car journeys a year off the city's streets.

Cllr Joe Clarke, chairman of GMPTE, said: "If we are to begin to reverse the trends in private car use and cut pollution and traffic congestion in the region, we need to attract people back onto public transport.

"People will only leave their cars at home if there are reliable, high quality public transport alternatives.

"That is why the authority is working in close partnership with the operators of local services, local authorities and other private sector interests to develop a framework for the successful integration of public transport."
