A COUPLE had a lucky escape early today when their kitchen caught fire while they slept.
The young pair are believed to have left food cooking under a grill while they slept upstairs at home in Bridgewater Street, Hindley.
But they fled to safety after hearing loud crackling coming from the kitchen. Firefighters said the blaze, which spread quickly and badly damaged the kitchen, could easily have killed the couple, who were not named.
"It's a good job they were alerted by the noise of the fire or they could have been in big trouble," said a spokesman. The couple's kitchen was badly damaged by the blaze and other rooms were left smoke-logged.
