DANE Zlatar was annoyed when his friend Slobodan Vasic bit his ear off at a drinking party that got out of hand in Yugoslavia. 'Forgive me', begged Slobodan in a tearful public apology, but Dane replied: 'I can't - you made me ugly.'

MORE than 500 European Volunteer Workers went to the Albert Hall, Bolton, last night to hear Bolton Corporation's plans to help them settle down. A suggestion made by the Mayor (Ald Hampson) that each of the nationalities or group of nationalities present should elect a representative who could put forward their particular problems was translated into Polish and German. Four representatives, for Bolton, the Baltic States, Ukraine, and an International group, were selected. Ald. Hampson said the EVWs were now residents of Bolton, and the town's facilities were theirs. They should regard themselves as citizens of Bolton, become part of the whole community, and contribute in whatever way they could to the life of the town.

THE Magistrates for the Bolton Division of the County have at length determined to be a terror to Wife-beaters, and very properly so. It is high time that husbands who seem on certain occasions to dispense with every obligation of humanity, and indulge in the most diabolically atrocious treatment of their wives should be taught that it cannot be done with impunity. The cases are far too numerous in which wives, after shielding years of maltreatment received at the hands of their husbands, are compelled to appeal to the law for protection, or submit to be murdered by a slow process of brutal punishment.
Yesterday, the Bolton County Magistrates gave a formal notice to men guilty of assaults on women that the heaviest penalties the law allows will be enforced.
