TWO Bolton pensioners expected to find companionship when they went into a retirement home to spend their twilight years. But Ellis Clarke, 88, and Emily Greenhalgh, 86, found something better . . . love. Now the sweethearts plan to celebrate their engagement this weekend with a party for family and friends from all over the country.
Romantic Ellis started wooing Emily soon after moving into Kensington House Nursing Home on Green Lane, Great Lever about eight months ago.
He spotted her as he passed her room on the way to the dining hall and started popping in for regular chats.
But friendship soon turned to romance and he recently proposed to Emily who was also new at the home. "I did not say yes straight away but once I got used to the idea I thought it might be nice," said Emily who was married to first husband James for 63 years until he died four years ago.
"I was not looking for anybody else but I like good manners and Ellis has very good manners," added the pensioner who has 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
On Saturday Ellis will present Emily with a diamond engagement ring and the pair will enjoy a party complete with cake, buffet and entertainment.
