A LARGE tract of the shore of Doffcocker Lodge has been given to Bolton for development as parkland and a nature reserve. The gift has been made by Major General the Lord Beaumont of Carlton Towers, Goole, Yorkshire, whose ancestors have held the land since the 16th Century. A condition is that the land should remain open in perpetuity and be developed as an amenity for the residents of Bolton.

HOLIDAYMAKERS again packed Bolton's bus and railway stations today. Most of them were off to Blackpool for the day. At Trinity-st. station, the first Blackpool train went out full at 9.6am, and from then onwards six-deep queues stretched out of the station for 50 yards and more. Many who had come for the 10.46 train were left behind, and had to wait nearly an hour for the next train. At Moor-lane bus station, 14 express service buses had left for Blackpool by 10.30am, and the queue still waiting extended round the back of the station.

A SIMPLE Bolton youth, named Edward Nixon, arrived at Drogheda a day or two ago, to visit some friends at Kells. He was met by a man named King, who took him by the hand and cordially welcomed him home from Liverpool. Easily learning from the young lad that his name was Nixon, and that he was going home to Kells, King assured him that he knew his father and mother and all belonging to him well, and if there were people whom he held in affectionate regard it was the Nixons. So delighted was he at meeting a boy of the same name that he insisted on carrying his bag for him to the train, as he was going the same journey. Arrived at the station, the bag was placed in the parcel office. He then borrowed half-a-crown from the boy, but kindly took him into the refreshment room and treated him out of the money, not forgetting, of course, to do likewise to himself. While the young lad was discussing a tart King withdrew, and having secured the carpet bag containing all the property and coin the boy had with him, he levanted. The police having been communicated with, he was found with the bag in his possession in a lodging-house, and on Monday he was sentenced to four months' imprisonment.
