AN imaginative World Cup chant written by a Leigh man came first in a competition, run by the Nationwide Building Society, and earned him a place at the World Cup 98.
Mr Barry Harker, one of twenty winners in the national competition, won a pair of tickets to see a first round game in France with transport included.
To win the prize, Mr Harker had to open a Nationwide Football '98 account and save at least £20 a month.
He then had to answer a question and make up a chant for either the England or Scotland team.
His winning entry, "Hoddle's boys have got the power, We'll fly the flag from the Eiffel Tower", was chosen from a large number of entries of a very high standard.
There is still the chance to win tickets in monthly competitions and, in May, someone will win tickets to the World Cup Final.
Other prizes include five Sony home cinema centres worth £2,000 each.
Customers opening an account receive a Football '98 welcome pack which includes details of further competitions and Football '98 goodies.
