SIR: Your pun suggesting that the Bromley Cross sub-post office was about to move "first class" conceals the fact that it has been first class for many years already. (It won awards for excellence only last year).

Exactly where, among foodstuffs, cigarettes and spirits, the Co-op is going to accommodate a sub-post office, is a mystery to all who know the premises, and whether the unique (and fast disappearing) brand of knowledgeable, efficient and friendly personnel will in future be available is highly doubtful in a climate of ever more profit-orientated cost cutting. Merely replacing a three-position with a four-position counter means nothing.

The retirement of our long serving independent sub-postmistress will be a sad event for many of us here in Bromley Cross, not least because another bastion against the decay of communities will be replaced by the impersonal and soulless store culture.
