A HOST of golden daffodils greeted guests who saw the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in Moss Bank Park.

The planting of thousands of bulbs has created a "Field of Hope" for Bolton, an annual reminder of the hope that Marie Curie Cancer Care gives to local people living with cancer.

Yesterday representatives from Marie Curie, Bolton Council and other supporters met in the park to see the plaque on a stone memorial unveiled.

The daffodils were planted in memory of loved ones who have died and local people have paid to have names inscribed on the plaque's Roll of Honour.

The names of individuals, schools and organisations who have helped are also on the memorial. And the memorial and daffodils are designed as a lasting memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales. Her picture appears on the plaque.

The appeal closed this month and has raised £7,500 in Bolton, which will buy an extra 500 hours of nursing care for local cancer sufferers.

Mark Rossiter, Bolton Evening News Editor-in-Chief, and chairman of the Bolton working group for Marie Curie Cancer Care, said the project had "captured both the hearts and imagination of the people of Bolton, while offering an appropriate memorial for those named on the plaque".

Many people had written to the BEN supporting the Field of Hope and their tales had proved "the Marie Curie Nurses were not a luxury but a necessity, providing vital hands on nursing care to those in need".
