SIR: I write with regard to the furore generated by the Labour Party's decision to suspend holding its annual conference in Blackpool.
The Labour conference is the largest political conference in Europe. The massive increase in Labour's membership over recent years, together with having the largest number of MPs in British history, the biggest number of local councillors of any party; and the largest contingent of Members of the European Parliament in the whole of the EU, has meant the Winter Gardens in Blackpool is no longer big enough to host a Labour conference.
The Winter Gardens, where Labour conferences have been held since the 1920s, requires considerable modernisation. It was never designed as a conference centre, and badly needs revamping. It is up to the property owners of the Winter Gardens to provide adequate investment to renovate the building.
If better facilities can be provided, then Labour will be more than happy to make a return to Blackpool.
