SIR: I am writing in response to the continuing controversy regarding the parking problems at Lostock train station. I'm continually puzzled by the arguments regarding further expansion of the car park. Why even bother? Why couldn't Lostock's role as the commuter train station serving west Bolton be entirely replaced by the new Middlebrook train station to be completed later this year? The number of services running from Lostock could be replaced by a similar service from Middlebrook leaving Lostock with a similar service to other suburban stations such as my local station, Bromley Cross. If people have to drive to Lostock then a drive to Middlebrook is hardly going to kill them. It's not as if there's a lack of parking at the Middlebrook!
