SIR: It is said 'what goes up must come down' unless, of course, we refer to the town's council tax, which is forever going up and is always way above the rate of inflation. How many people in employment have had a 7.9 per cent increase in salary? In a great number of cases, they haven't had any increase whatsoever for the past two to three years. And what about those on benefit and our senior citizens? They haven't had a 7.9 per cent increase, so where do they find the extra money from?
Councillor Bob Howarth says the majority of folk can pay, and, to this comment I say - "get your head out of the clouds, Bob", because the majority are finding life very difficult. John Major said of his policies - if they aren't hurting, they aren't working - and we know what happened to him. Councillor Bob's policies aren't working, but they are certainly hurting.
