IT may not sound like your average World Cup anthem, but North-west comic Smug Roberts is hoping it will score points with the fans.

And with the help of Radcliffe Borough Football Club, "Meat pie, sausage roll, come on England, give us a goal! "might do just that.

Film crews and technicians descended on Stainton Park, Radcliffe on Tuesday to film the video for the song which is expected to take on the pop world as the unofficial World Cup record.

Crowds of local people filled the stands with the hope of being captured on film.

The video shows Grandad "Smug" Roberts and his son Elvis walking from a house in Culshaw Close East towards Boro's ground. From there they lead the crowd through several choruses of "Meat pie, sausage roll", before moving into Boro pub, which is transformed into a workingmen's club.

Smug, real name Andy Wilkinson, said: "The Radcliffe crowd were really good, and what's nice is that it's all different ages, from the young kids at the front to the scallies at the back. Come to think of it, the scallies were probably there for the free beer."

The song started life as a jingle on Manchester radio station Key 103. But it got such a great response, Smug and Elvis - alias Archie Kelly - joined forces with songwriters Martin Coogan and Dave Newton, and the "Meat Pie Sausage Roll" song was born. Originally the words were "come on Oldham, give us a goal", but with much public encouragement, the duo decided to go for gold and change "Oldham" to "England".

After much air play and a live performance in front of 600 people, 2,000 copies of the song sold out in just three hours.

"It's just been unbelievable," said Smug. "We went from a little jingle to having meetings in London with record executives. And we're loving it. We're putting the fun back in football. It's the people's choice. We're doing it out of public demand."

Elvis, who back in the real world teaches Spanish and French in a school in Chadderton, added: "Never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd be doing a World Cup song."

The three and a half minute video took from 9am to 10pm to shoot and will be shown in the run up to the World Cup. The single will be released on May 25, sharing the Warner Brothers label with the likes of Madonna and REM.

Pete Mitchell and fellow Key 103 presenter Geoff Lloyd also appear in the video as musicians in the Smug Band, filmed inside the Boro pub.

Pete said: "We must have heard the song more than 1,000 times by now. It started out as a bit of a daft jingle and the Grandad Roberts character developed from there. Eighteen months later, here we are. Once the video's done, we'll be away! "
