SIR: Last year I was besieged by mountains of junk mail from firms stating that I had won thousands, and in some cases, millions of pounds.
I did not flinch, as I thought there must be a catch. Of course, this was the case. It was that old enemy 'small print'.
In huge block letters was written: "Mr B Howarth, you have just won six million pounds!", but this was preceded with: "If you have the winning entry". What is amazing is that the wording is legal.
I have known people who have taken these "wins" seriously and gone on huge spending sprees on the strength of expecting a huge "win" which never came.
I think this matter ought to be cleared up as some people do not "catch" the small print.
