The Opera House, Manchester. Runs until Saturday, May 16. THIS latest version of Joseph sparkled from start to finish in a truly outstanding show.
The tried and trusted West End winner has wowed audiences of millions throughout Britain for almost 30 years.
But this Lloyd Webber-Rice musical classic was at its best in Manchester last night as a large audience clapped and foot-tapped its way through timeless tunes including Close Every Door and Any Dream Will Do.
There were no star names to tell Joseph's simple tale on his journey from ostracised son to dream-translating friend of the all-powerful Pharoah.
But dazzling colour, a frantic pace, dashes of humour and brilliant performances lit up two hours of terrific entertainment.
Richard Swerrun, commanding in the star role of Joseph, caught the eye with a high-energy performance and confident solo songs.
Julie Maguire - probably the only member of the cast not subject to constant, impressive costume changes - was also excellent as narrator.
But audience members, all on their feet for a foot-stomping finale, saved special praise for a brilliant cameo by hip-swinging Pharoah Dean Maynard.
His arrival - with a bang - brought screams from girls normally only reserved for the likes of boy band Take That or even an Egyptian King called ... Elvis Presley.
Mention must also go to the child choir which added another special touch to this magical show. PAUL BROSTER
