BOLTON ex-serviceman Robert Longworth is to be awarded the British Legion's top honour in recognition of more than 30 years loyal service. Mr Longworth will be presented with the National Certificate of Appreciation by the Legion's National President, Sir Roger Austin at the Opera House in the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on May 24. The certificate is the Legion's highest honour and Mr Longworth will be one of about a dozen members receiving the award.
Mr Longworth, aged 63, of Rawson Road, Bolton, served in the Loyal North Lancs Regiment between 1955-57 and spent 12 months in Malaya as a rifleman during his national service.
He joined the Bolton Royal British Legion branch in 1963 and has filled almost every position in the Legion including chairman, secretary and treasurer. He has also been active on the Mid Lancs County committee and his previous honours include the prestigious Gold Badge and Life Membership.
He said: "It has been a great honour to serve the Legion and I am very proud to receive this award."
