A BOLTON councillor says he is determined to get to the root of a problem which he claims is not only an eyesore, but hazardous to pensioners in Westhoughton.

Cllr David Wilkinson is furious about the state of grass verges left behind by the Council's contractors outside old people's housing.

He claims clumps of grass are left behind and slippery cuttings lie unattended on pathways.

Alick's Fold and Thornwell are the two examples highlighted by the councillor.

He said: "It is a problem the old people living there have faced for about four years.

"The contractors arrive, cut the grass as quickly as possible and leave, not caring about the mess they leave behind.

"Elderly people are being left to sweep up and move the cuttings for themselves. In addition, I know one or two pensioners have slipped on the wet, freshly cut pieces of grass left lying on footpaths.

"These people are not getting the service they deserve. Not only that, but they are left looking at an eyesore on what amounts to the lawn outside their homes.

"I have complained time and time again to the council but to no avail."

A Council spokesman told the Bolton Evening News: "We do have a contractor for grass cutting and they are cut on a regular basis.

"Occasionally there can be delays because of particularly bad weather and on those occasions excess cuttings can gather.

"They should be cleared up. I will ensure this matter is investigated.

"If anything is wrong I will ensure it will be rectified in double quick time."
