THE Government's battle against inflation is a triumph for 'reason, moderation and common sense', Chancellor of the Exchequer Mr Anthony Barber said today. THE members of the Chadwick Statue Committee waited upon the Town Hall Committee, at the Corporation Offices, on Wednesday afternoon, in reference to the resolution at which they had arrived as to the proposed site for Dr Chadwick's statue. James Barlow, Esq., urged upon the members of the committee not to set themselves in opposition, not only to the wishes of the Chadwick Memorial Committee, but to the expressed opinion of a majority of the inhabitants of the town; and referred to the great services which Dr Chadwick had rendered to the poor of the borough for so many years. The Town Hall Committee said that they adhered to their former decision, and they did so on the ground that they must decline to permit any statue less important than a national one to be placed on the site selected. Mr Alderman Ferguson was requested by the Memorial Committee to bring the subject forward at the next meeting of the Town Council, and he agreed to place a notice upon the agenda paper to rescind the resolution of the Town Hall Committee as to the site. From an advertisement in our columns, it will be seen that a public meeting is to be held to consider the subject.
