EXHIBITS ranging from the first ever rugby league cup to a display of maps will be on show when Chorley's Astley Hall launches itself into a national initiative.
For the hall's museum and art gallery is taking part in a special museums week between May 16-24 along with some 1,000s around the country.
The popular Chorley venue has seen a staggering 160 per cent rise in attendances over the past three years.
And according to national statistics, visiting museums ranks as one of the most popular leisure activities in Britain.
Chorley Borough Council's community services committee vice-chairman Danny Gee said: "It is very satisfying to see our own museum taking such an active part in this national event.
"The success of Astley Hall over the past few years has shown the importance local people attach to their own heritage and the interest that those who live outside Chorley take in our borough."
A special free admissions day is being planned for Sunday, May 24, but throughout the week there will be various events and activities taking place.
Items normally kept under safe lock and key, such as the first ever rugby league cup, a selection of fine drinking glasses from the 1700s, clogs and clogmaking equipment and old maps showing the historic county of Lancashire, will be on display. On May 16-17, a Tudor blacksmith and badge maker will be at work in the courtyard, while a tour behind the scenes will take place on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday of each week.
On the free entry day, May 24, it will be non stop fun for all the family.
Traditional Punch and Judy shows will be accompanied by a quiz competition for the kids and free balloons for everyone.
