THE family of a promising young footballing dad gathered together yesterday to mourn his death.

Brett Alan Markwick was discovered on May 4 near his parent's home in Malton, North Yorkshire. An inquest into his death has already been opened,

Brett, 23, moved from his home in Old Clough Lane, Walkden, 13 years ago with his parents Brian and Susan and sisters Tracy and Hayley to Yorkshire.

The former pupil of St Paul's C of E Primary School, Crompton Street, Worsley, went on to become an apprentice footballer for York City following his family's move.

Yesterday his aunt, Glenys Purcell, of The Green, Worsley, told of her family's deep shock following Brett's sudden death.

His parents were told the news while on holiday in Tunisia and flew home.

Mrs Purcell said: "We're not sure exactly what has happened but it is a tragedy. We've never experienced anyone so young dying in our family. It has been a terrible time.

"Brett was a lovely lad who was always so full of fun and life. All the neighbours can remember him and everyone says he was a smashing little boy.

"They were all sorry to see him leave when the family moved. Brian and Susan are absolutely devastated by what has happened."

Relatives who live in Worsley, Walkden and Little Hulton made the journey yesterday for his funeral in St Mary's Priory Church, Old Malton.

Brett had recently moved into the catering industry after side-lining his love of football. He also leaves a young daughter, Imogen.

Mrs Purcell added: "My husband and I were hoping to set up a restaurant business and we'd hoped Brett would be joining us.

"He was such a popular lad with so many friends."
