SIR: What a beautiful letter Mr Kippax of Jersey wrote (May 7), regarding the granting of Knighthoods. A knighthood for 'The Lion of Vienna' would be much appreciated.
It is clear Mr J F Kippax's grandfather who was a prisoner of war of the Japanense, was later a hard-working man who didn't milk the state. His grandad and all like him deserved knighthoods.
My Ashton in Makerfield, eight stone grandad did 50 years in the coal pits of Lancashire, when pit lives were hard! Grandad worked in wretched conditions, and once had to be hauled back from a low part of a pit by his clogs. (His clogs had jammed between the roof and the floor!).
