BLIND campaigner Frank Parkinson is celebrating winning his battle for a pelican crossing in Tyldesley. The disabled man was asked to switch on the safety crossing in Shuttle Street today, marking the end of a seven-year fight. The new Somerfields superstore in Tyldesley has footed the bill for the crossing to Mr Parkinson's delight.

Mr Parkinson, who lives close to the crossing, said: "I am pleased about this and would like to thank the borough engineer for his invitation, local ward councillors for their support and advice and of course the developers, Bushwing and Pochin, who have made the crossing possible."

Wigan Council refused to build the pelican crossing due to lack of funds.

Borough engineer Mr John Simm said: "When we are using public money, out of fairness to everyone else who might want a crossing, we have to keep the rules.

"However, the situation has changed in Tyldesley because of the new superstore which will bring a great many more pedestrians needing to cross the traffic, so I am very happy that this will mean that Mr Parkinson will get his crossing. Full marks to him for his persistence."

The formal switch on was due to take place today as guests and ward councillors gathered at the Shuttle Street, Stanley Street junction.
