BOLTON grammar schools will survive. That promise was given today by Counc. John Hanscomb, leader of the ruling Conservative Group on the new Bolton Metropolitan District Council. His statement lifts the threat which has been hanging over the borough's direct grant and local authority grammar schools since January, when the Socialist town council began to prepare a scheme of comprehensive secondary reorganisation.

WITH very little rain falling since the first fortnight in February, Bolton now has only 110 days' supply of water, as compared with 156 days' supply last year. The position is now becoming serious, and if there is not an appreciable amount of rain soon, restrictions will be placed on the use of existing supplies. Before the war the average water consumption was 7,500,000 gallons a day, but has now increased to 10,000,000 gallons without any additional resources to compete with the increased consumption.

JABEZ Ratcliffe, Market-street, Little Lever, claimed £3 from Daniel Warburton, pig dealer, Brownlow-fold, for loss sustained by a sow that died.

The plaintiff stated that he bought a sow pig from the defendant on the understanding that if it died from the foot and mouth disease, under which it had been suffering, he should have another pig in exchange.

The pig died a few days after the plaintiff had it in his possession, and then the defendant refused to stick to his bargain to give another pig, but offered to give 15s.

The defendant denied giving any assurance to give another pig, and that the pig in question was bought with all risks.

At the suggestion of Mr Hall, the defendant agreed to give the plaintiff half his claim, and this the latter agreed to. Verdict for the plaintiff 30s, the court costs to be divided.
