SIR: In 1996, I ran in 12 races, totalling 100 miles, for a very worthy cause. It was hard work, but I had tremendous fun - and I had the satisfaction of knowing that my "Motty's Challenge" raised almost £100,000 for NCH Action For Children.
On Saturday, June 13, 1998, thousands of people from all over Britain will take part in a unique event called "Step Out For Children". This very special day offers everyone the choice of over 130 beautiful and scenic walks of varying lengths, and most are wheelchair, pushchair and pet friendly!
But "Step Out for Children" isn't just about being sponsored for walking. Health club members can be sponsored by stepping out aerobically, dance clubs members can be sponsored to line dance, lambada or rock 'n' roll and those who really fancy a challenge can step out of an aircraft in a sponsored parachute jump!
In 1997, "Step Out For Children" raised £100,000 for NCH Action For Children's work with children and families in need, and this year, with your help, the aim is to raise £200,000.
Regrettably, I won't be "stepping out" on June 13 this year, as I'll be in France commentating on the World Cup - but I urge as many people as possible to take part and raise money for vulnerable children and families.
Full details of all the walks and other sponsored events, together with sponsor forms, can be obtained by ringing the "Step Out For Children" Helpline on 0345 626579.
