SIR: Recent events have highlighted the debate around the use of animals as "experimental tools" .
Hill Grove Farm in Oxfordshire typifies the true horrors of vivisection - cats being bred in intensive farm conditions solely to be experimented on then killed. Reports of new "wonder" cancer drugs sound hollow as it is realised that animal experiments - in this case mice which suffer from different types of cancers and, of course, react differently to drugs - cannot be used to predict human reactions or solve our health problems. Clearly the way forward is to carry out humane research (such as cell and tissue culture) which is directly applicable to humans. Powerful laws of nature seem to dictate that positive rewards will never be gained as the result of the exploitation of other sentient beings. I would like to invite everyone who wants to see an end to animal experiments to come along to the annual National March Against Vivisection and Cruelty-Free Exhibition in Sheffield. This year's event - Rage '98 - is being held on Saturday June 6. The carnival march begins at 1 pm and the marquee is open from 11 am?????? to 5 pm. Show you care - be there! Transport from many areas - ring for details. Contact: Uncaged, 14 Ridgeway Road, Sheffield S12 2SS Tel: 0114 2530020 Fax: 0114 2654070. ?Lynn Williamson
