SIR: Your report of Horwich Town Council pumping another £50,000 into the Horwich Resource Centre (BEN, May 18) shows to all interested parties that the local Labour party and their Liberal Democrat lap dogs have failed to take on board the suggestions and criticisms of local Conservatives about the funding of the centre.
We local Conservatives, believe in the aim and objectives of the Resource Centre. But, we believe that if the Resource Centre became a charity it could and would be eligible for lottery funding and the like, exactly the same as the centre run by the Great Lever Community Associations' community centre, which has just received £140,000 from the Lottery. This dismisses all the protestations of local Liberal and Labour politicians that the centre could not apply for grants. I believe that Labour and their Lib-Dem lapdogs are completely unable to grasp any concept that would save the council tax-paying public money. And they are only too willing to throw more than 80 pc of Horwich Council's money into the Resource Centre which is used only by a minority of the people of Horwich, when the money could be used and saved to benefit the people of Horwich. And as Chairman of the Horwich Conservatives I promise that if we gain control of Horwich Town Council, we will attempt to cut the council tax precept by half. Ivan A Cooper, Chairman
