A NEW campaign to drive evil con men out of Bolton has been launched by police.

Bolton's crime prevention team is urging the public to put the block on bogus workmen and cowboy builders who prey on the elderly and vulnerable in the town.

The team is ready to visit groups in the area to drive home the crime busting message.

Under the slogan 'If in doubt, keep them out' police have warned all householders not to let anyone suspicious into their home.

Police have also advised everyone to keep security tight at their houses during the hot summer months.

Sneak thieves become more active during the hot weather each year, taking advantage of open doors and windows.

Bolton police community safety officer Chris Waters said: "Always ask for identity cards and remember that your home is your castle."

There have been various cases in Bolton where elderly people have been ripped off by cowboy builders doing shoddy work for extortionate amounts of money after calling door-to-door canvassing for jobs. Mr Waters said: "Don't be conned by smooth-talking criminals.

"If you need to get building work done get several written quotations from trustworthy firms and then decide which is the best."

And police have urged the public to report anyone acting suspiciously outside their home.

Mr Waters added: "Even if you send someone on their way they may be preying on your next-door neighbour, so if in doubt call the police on 0161-872 5050.

"Always get a good description of people and if possible their car registration number."

Groups who want more crime prevention information can call Mr Waters at Astley Bridge station on 0161-856 5746 or community safety officer PC Stuart Ashall at Bolton central station on 0161-856 5625.
