ABOUT half past five o'clock on Monday evening, a dreadful accident occurred at Black-lane station of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. two platelayers were returning from the direction of Bradley Fold, having finished their work for the day. When they neared Black-lane station a goods train passed them, going in the direction of Bolton, and this had scarcely gone by when another train came along proceeding in the direction of Bury. The two men were walking in the 'six foot', and as they stepped into the four-foot of the up-line in order to be out of the way of the Bolton train, they were caught by the engine of the Bury train and dragged about a dozen yards by the wheels of the engine. Both men were shockingly mutilated, death being, of course, instantaneous, and their bodies presenting a sickening sight.
