SIR: Local members of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints journeyed to Chorley this week to see their new Preston Temple for the first time. It is estimated that in excess of 150,000 visitors, both church members and the general public, will make the tour of this building during the official "open house".
Situated on a 15-acre site at Hartwood Green, off the M61, this modern building was completed only recently, having taken almost four years to build.
Finished in Olympia white granite from Sardinia and with a gold statue of the Angel Moroni atop its spire, it is an arresting landmark in the area.
The new Temple will be of great benefit to the members of the Bolton Ward. Previously, we were obliged to travel to what is known as The London Temple, at Newchapel, near Lingfield, Surrey. Our Temple visits will not now require such a long journey.
