BETTER late than never. It was in 1993 that a coroner recommended that Bolton Council should consider banning cyclists on St Peter's way.
Although councillors agreed with him, they have felt they had to wait to bring in such restriction until a cycle lane was created.
But still not everyone is convinced that the ban is necessary. Highways sub committeee councillors were today being shown objections from cycling groups and members of the public before making their decision.
It seems that most of the objections allege there is not a safer alternative route into Bolton town centre from the south.
St Peter's Way safe for cyclists? The coroner did not think so in 1993 and the volume of traffic conditions has not decreased since then.
If cyclists have to be saved from themselves, then so be it. There is now a designated lane along Manchester Road for cyclists to use. It's time the ban was imposed.
