HUNDREDS of Bolton people suffering from industrial diseases could soon have the chance to claim compensation. The opportunity comes as a specialist firm providing expert help on compensation claims prepares to run a free advice clinic in the area. Preston-based Industrial Diseases Compensation Limited will open the advice shop for one day only.
A spokesman for the firm explained: "Compensation for industrial diseases remains unclaimed by thousands of local workers and the retired.
"Injuries suffered in the workplace are often put down to a 'hazard of the job' - many live with the ignorance that a claim for hearing loss, for example, can only be made if the hearing is severely impaired - this is not the case." Staff at IDC expect a flood of calls from former miners who live in and around the town who suffer from bronchitis and emphysema.
Already dozens of ex-pitmen who suffer respiratory problems have lodged claims for pay-outs after a High Court ruling earlier this year opened the doors for claimants.
The advice centre will include a special screening clinic which will offer a free hearing test.
Industrial deafness and vibration white finger - which affects operators of pneumatic tools - are the most common diseases. But advice will also be given on bronchitis and emphysema, allergic rhinitis - caused by exposure to dust and chemical fumes - and asbestos-related diseases.
The clinic will be based at the Greenfields Club, at the rear of 68 Wigan Road, Westhoughton on Thursday June 25 from noon till 3pm.
Potential claimants can also get advice from a freephone line on 0800 454532.
