AS landlord of the Black Bull in Edgworth, Peter Shillitoe has led the way in the Best Pub section of the BEN's annual garden competition. During the past few years of Bolton in Bloom, Peter's imagination and colourful displays have always seen him coming up smelling of roses. But this year, the gauntlet has been thrown down to other landlords to take over the mantle.
Peter will be retiring from the contest when he leaves the pub, his unbeaten run intact.
The colourful array of hanging baskets and window boxes have given Peter the edge each year over fellow competitors.
Last year Peter won a trophy from Porter Lancastrian, a meal for four at the Beaumont Hotel and Restaurant, and champagne from the BEN.
Now, the door is open for other green fingered licensees.
The Best Pub category is one of several open to keen gardeners in Bolton. They not only have the chance to win the BEN's gardening contest, but to also add to the town's overall entry into the Britain in Bloom contest.
Pubs in particular play a colourful role in boosting the town's contribution into the national competition.
The council's leisure services department is co-ordinating the contest and will be supplying hanging baskets and seasonal beds to brighten up the town's buildings and open spaces.
Chairman of the leisure services committee, Cllr Gerald Riley explained that the benefits of taking part in the contest outstrips personal glory.
He said: "Having more flowers around not only helps in the regional and national parts of the competition, it makes a place more appealing to visitors."
Licensees who aim to become the toast of their regulars need to get working. Those who have already made a public show of themselves, include the town centre's Swan Hotel, the Hen and Chickens pub and Cottons pub.
Closing date for entries into the BEN's competition is June 26.
