LIEUT Mark Phillips, the soldier and daring horseman, admitted today that he was 'petrified' when he asked Prince Philip for his daughter's hand. He said this as he strolled with Princess Anne on the lawns of Buckingham Palace. The newly-engaged couple, looking relaxed and happy, were answering a 'photo call' for Pressmen and TV cameras. The couple arrived back in London today from Balmoral, and got a rapturous welcome from a waiting crowd at King's Cross Station at 8am.

MESSRS S. Bullock and A.E. Clarke, the Albany, Mawdsley-st., Bolton, who hope soon to run a private police force in certain districts in the town, have been busy, recently, interviewing some of the circularized in the Heaton district. The fine weather has hampered them - many people have been out when they have called, but they say that about two-thirds of those interviewed have joined the scheme, which, however, is not now likely to begin until Bolton Holiday Week. Several people from other districts have made inquiries, and would like similar schemes started in their neighbourhoods.

SIR,- Once again I venture to speak on behalf of our Sunday School scholars in relation to the Royal visit. I do not think any of the loyal ratepayers of Bolton will complain any louder at the shameful extravagance of our Tory Town Council if they do a little for the Sunday scholars.
Please, Mr Mayor and gentlemen of the Council, in remembering the Prince don't forget the town. In throwing money about throw a little to the scholars. Surely you might give them a medal. We shall be quite content to have a few less of the innumerable 'red sticks', 'pin-wheels', and 'balloons', if something can be done for the children. Just a little medal, please. The scholars will be here after the Prince, and although every class of the community, from the jerry lord to the gentlemen, has been provided for, the scholars are being shamefully overlooked - or neglected. Yours &c., S.S.T.
