WE give unequivocal backing to the proposal that a 50mph speed limit should operate on St Peter's Way.
The dual carriageway's Satanic nickname of "devil's highway" says it all. There has been an unacceptably high number of serious crashes on this stretch of road.
Anyone who has driven along St Peter's Way knows that some drivers give scant regard to the fact that they are no longer on a motorway. Perhaps some of them do not even realise they have left it.
Too many drivers maintain high speeds as they head for town and the potential for accidents is high.
With the 50mph speed limit will come speed cameras and changes to road markings on slip road entries which should hammer home the point.
These measures are needed as quickly as possible. Bolton Council has already banned cycling, this latest proposal complements that ban.
