TWO British trawlers were rammed by the Icelandic gunboat Arvakur today and one of them holed. There had earlier been a collision between the gunboat and the defence tug Irishman in another Cod War clash.
THE Greek Government today abolished the monarchy and declared Greece a republic. Premier George Papadopoulos accused 32-years-old self-exiled King Constantine of having plotted to overthrow the Colonel's regime, established in 1967. The change was precipitated last week by an abortive mutiny in the Greek navy.

SIR,- I am a poor widow with family, and the only way I can take a part with them in the enjoyment of the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales is by going to see the illuminations, and a friend promised to provide a conveyance for me and mine to go round and see them, but to my great surprise the police say that we cannot take a horse and carriage into the streets, and as I cannot go in any other way, I shall be cut out of even this little mite of comfort.
Now, Mr Editor, cannot you say a word for me and others, and help us a sight of the lighting up and oblige yours,
A Widow and a Ratepayer, Derby-street.
SIR,- We are told there may be a scarcity of water this summer. The advice given to householders is very good, viz., 'to be careful in the consumption of water'. Just allow me, Mr Editor, to give them a little advice - to be careful and keep our water taps in repair. There is a vast deal lost through neglecting these. There are scores of them out of repair, running water away wholesale. I think we as householders are not responsible for water lost in this way. It may seem trifling, but I hold it to be a very important thing, and I hope this will be attended to; and I shall be only too glad if this letter will be attended to, and I shall only be too glad if this letter will induce those whose duty it is to see to it. I might have said more but you are pressed for space. I beg to remain, yours very obediently,
Water, Halliwell.
