ASTON Villa were expected to make their interest in Wanderers midfield ace Alan Thompson official today.
Villa boss John Gregory has made no secret of his admiration of the £5 million-rated Geordie star and his chairman, Doug Ellis, was planning talks with Wanderers chairman Gordon Hargreaves.
The Birmingham club represent the most serious challenge to Leeds United in the race for Thompson's signature.
Leeds, who have already had a £3.5 million bid rejected, have suggested they are ready to top any Villa offer.
Everton are understood to have had a £3.7 million offer turned down and Leicester have also asked to be kept informed of developments. Weekend speculation that Manchester United are also in the running has not been treated seriously by any of the clubs involved.
