SIR: Your June 1 correspondent, I Cooper (Elector Bolton West), is undoubtedly the same Ivan Cooper who wrote to you on this very subject some weeks ago. He is quite right in thinking that some may think his suggestion, that in becoming pregnant, Ruth Kelly MP has betrayed her electors in Bolton West, is a tasteless one. More importantly, his repetition of this accusation brings his judgement into question, and confirms that electors in the Horwich Ward local election were correct in rejecting his candidacy recently. The idea that women MPs should deny themselves family life, in the interest of their constituents, sounds more like old fashioned male chauvinism than anything else to me.
