FIREWORKS stolen during a raid in Bury could be deadly if they fall into the wrong hands, police have warned.

The £5,000 haul was taken from Bury-based Evolution Ltd after thieves sawed off the lock from an outside storage container.

Hundreds of packets of assorted fireworks were taken from the Hacking Street premises, including Roman candles and rockets -- some of which are capable of producing up to 1,000 shots.

The majority were destined to be used at professional displays.

Evolution boss Tony Hall said: "These fireworks are very dangerous if they end up being used by people who don't know what they're doing.

"I just hope that whoever stole them won't offer the fireworks to youngsters."

Among the brand names stolen were "Red Dragon", "Grand Finale", "Diamond" and "Artillery Batteries."

All the fireworks conform to British safety standards but can be very dangerous in the wrong hands.

Mr Hall added: "Many of these have to be buried up to two thirds in the ground. If they are not, and fall over when lit, they can be very dangerous -- especially if it's aimed towards a crowd. Many are just totally unsuitable for household gardens.

"If someone with a child came into us and asked to buy some of these large fireworks, I wouldn't sell them.

"I just hope that whoever was responsible for the theft won't be trying to sell these to kids."

Det Sgt Dave Maguire of Bury Police crime management unit warned people not to buy fireworks from those who are not licensed to do so.

He said: "People should only purchase from reputable shops and dealers.

"They should not buy from anyone else offering cheap fireworks."

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to ring Bury Police on 0161-856 8157.
