REGARDING door-to-door collections. We at Age Concern Bolton have been contacted by many householders expressing serious concern about the underhand methods of recycling companies which pass themselves off as "third world" or other charities.
Typically, householders are invited to donate unwanted clothing, shoes etc. in the belief that these will be sent to poorer people in overseas countries. These companies cunningly imitate the door-to-door collection made by reputable charities such as our own, but are careful not to include on their collection bags any reference to being a registered charity.
I would urge householders to check, carefully, for evidence of a registered charity status and number before parting with clothing or other donations. Where these do appear, then people can donate their unwanted clothing and be confident that the proceeds from the sale or use of these will indeed be used to support that particular charity's work.
Thank you for allowing me to bring the facts on this dubious practice by some non-charitable organsations to your readers' attention.
