WE hope that Bolton councillors see the light tonight and urge the Government to finally ban the sale of fireworks.

Today's yobbish element has turned a basically enjoyable occasion into weeks of fear for local pensioners, intimidated and frightened in their own homes.

Each year, there are awful cases of burns and maimings as these mini-incendiaries are mis-handled, with innocent victims often bearing the long-term scars.

We do not want to deprive children of the pleasure of seeing beautiful firework displays, or enjoying the wintry camaraderie of a bonfire. But firework sales should be restricted to organised displays only and otherwise banned from shops -- and we urge all those with the power to do this.
