LEIGH RMI have taken a leaf out of Leigh Rugby Club's book for their travel arrangements to Fulham in the FA Cup on Sunday week. Supporters of the rugby club have in the past travelled to away matches at a much reduced rate, thanks to local businesses subsidising coaches and now the football club have picked up on the idea.
Asda Stores started the ball rolling with a substantial sponsorship and several local businesses have followed suit, so much so that the return cost to Fulham, whose chairman Al Fayed owns Harrods, will be just £10.
"Up to now we have around a dozen coaches booked and interest is increasing daily," said chairman Chris Healey. "The subsidy means that with the admission money the overall trip will cost £20 or £15 with concessions. "We have rugby league fans who are going to the third test between Great Britain and New Zealand at Watford on the Saturday, staying over for our match and our junior side have asked their leagues for matches that day to be postponed.
"If the leagues agree we will be taking down 150 junior players and thanks to local businesses it will be easier on the pocket."
