TWO eyesores in the School Hill area of Bolton are to be swept away and a new housing development is on the cards. work will begin soon on demolishing the former United Veterans' Association Club in Davenport Street and a derelict industrial unit next door. The plans have been drawn up by Bolton Council and North British Housing Association, one of the council's housing partners in Bolton Community homes.
If Housing Corporation grants and planning permission can be secured, it is proposed to build homes which can be rented.
The development would include a number of larger family houses.
Council leader Cllr Bob Howarth, who is a ward councillor, expressed his pleasure at the additional development, the final piece in the jigsaw in the redevelopment of School Hill.
"I'm especially pleased that, after all these years of work by myself and various ward councillors, it looks like we are getting towards a successful conclusion.
"The old foundry site is to be redeveloped with new homes alongside this new opportunity following the closure of the United Veterans' Club.
"It was sad that the club had to close down, but at least some good has come from the event.
"Presently this remaining area is a mess for residents to have to put up with, but we will all do our best to urge the projects forward."
It is expected that the site will be cleared within the next few months and the new homes should be constructed before the end of next year.
